Kirsty Mitchell (she/her)

Legal Manager

With Opportunity Green since: February 2024

“Among my prouder moments at Opportunity Green is the work I did in developing our legal action strategies into an entirely new sector: steel. Another really significant highlight for me has been our successful de-legitimisation of liquefied natural gas (fossil LNG) as a sustainable shipping fuel. Through this work, we secured multiple rulings from the UK advertising regulator, calling out LNG greenwashing, and filed our first court case against the European Commission, which challenged the inclusion of LNG shipping in the EU Taxonomy.”

Specialist areas:

Climate law and litigation, strategic legal interventions, environmental law, steel, shipping

About Kirsty:

Before joining Opportunity Green, Kirsty worked in the energy and climate change practice of an international law firm, specialising in renewable energy projects and environmental law. She also completed three in-house secondments to multinational companies. A qualified solicitor, Kirsty is a member of the Law Society of Scotland’s Sustainability Committee; a former Board Trustee of Scottish youth climate charity, 2050 Climate Group; and a member of the UK Environmental Law Association.

Kirsty leads OG’s legal work in the shipping and steel sectors, advocating for climate action and systemic change. Through her research, she seeks to define the key blocks to climate action, and applies that knowledge to seize legal opportunities that will accelerate positive change. Examples of her work include filing regulatory complaints that address the greenwashing of liquefied natural gas, and building relationships with NGOs and others to amplify impactful action. Kirsty has appeared in Business Green, Bunkerspot, the Financial Times and The Independent.
