With Opportunity Green since: June 2022
“I help to ensure that the whole organisation is working as one towards common goals, supporting different teams to connect the dots between their activities and make sure that they are as impactful as possible now and in the future. In particular, I have an in-depth knowledge of our legal team, climate diplomacy and advocacy teams, co-lead all fundraising efforts and am a member of the senior leadership team.”
Climate law and litigation, strategic legal interventions and the power of legal advocacy, regulatory and EU law, EU policy making, climate justice, OG’s full portfolio of work, especially diplomacy, advocacy and legal.
Carly began her career as an MEP political and policy advisor in the European Parliament, specialising in EU energy and environment policy. She went on to become a solicitor, training at an international commercial firm and then working as an energy lawyer at the National Grid, supporting the decarbonisation of the UK electricity system and cross-border electricity interconnections.
At Opportunity Green, Carly heads our legal, diplomacy and advocacy teams, ensuring that we think about the impact our work is having. She reviews a lot of the content we produce and co-leads on fundraising, thinking strategically about Opportunity Green’s direction of travel, pitching to fundraisers and coordinating funding proposals.
Some of Carly’s highlights over the years include developing Opportunity Green’s strategy against the shipping sector’s investment in liquified natural gas (fossil LNG) as a false climate solution. This resulted in an industry-first David v Goliath win against billion dollar company MSC Cruises and its third-party resellers. She has continued this work against LNG in a challenge to the European Court of Justice on Europe’s sustainable financing rules. Carly also helped to build a strong relationship with COSIS in the lead up to the 2025 International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Assembly, and led the legal team’s work on crucial climate opinions from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) and at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Carly has also enjoyed helping to steer Opportunity Green to the organisation it is today, as well as taking on the management of the diplomacy and advocacy teams. In particular, seeing Opportunity Green making real impact for climate vulnerable countries in IMO negotiations, as well as expanding its reach into Brussels where the SASHA Coalition is providing a much-needed ambitious industry position to policymakers.
Carly has featured in The Guardian, Climate Change News and podcasts with Foresight Media and TradeWinds, among many others.
