EU Omnibus proposal would gut sustainability regime

Press Release

27 February 2025: Last week the European Commission released its Omnibus Proposal aimed at simplifying reporting obligations to unburden businesses – but at the cost of environmental and human rights accountability.

Our Legal Director, David Kay, said:

“The Commission's Omnibus Proposal seems intent on gutting the sustainability regime. It would vastly reduce the companies obliged to report, limit supply chain transparency, and diminish corporate accountability. We’re concerned to see the intention to increase the Taxonomy's focus on 'transition finance', given the Taxonomy already green lights polluting activities like fossil fuel planes and LNG ships as “transitional”."

In August, Opportunity Green alongside Dryade, CLAW, Protect Our Winters Austria, and Fossielvrij NL, launched a legal challenge against the EU Commission for the Taxonomy's weak criteria that renders fossil LNG shipping and polluting planes eligible for finances earmarked for green activities.

David concluded,

"These laws need to be strengthened not rendered toothless if the EU is to meet its climate goals and cultivate competitiveness.”
